Alternatives · Last reviewed
The right Ollama alternative depends on why you are leaving: llama.cpp for raw speed and control, LM Studio or Jan for a desktop app, vLLM for serving many users from GPUs, mlx-lm for Apple's MLX, and llamay to keep your Ollama models and clients while adding contexts you can fork and save. Only some are open source; the table gives each one's licence from its own repository.
| Project | Licence | What it is | Reach for it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| llama.cpp | MIT — LICENSE | Engine and server (llama-server) | The fastest GGUF engine, every backend, new models first — compared |
| LM Studio | Proprietary — app terms | Desktop app; headless daemon (llmster) | A window, a model browser and MLX on a Mac — compared |
| vLLM | Apache-2.0 — LICENSE | Python GPU server | Many concurrent users on Linux GPUs — compared |
| Jan | Apache-2.0 — LICENSE | Desktop app | "An open source alternative to ChatGPT that runs 100% offline", in its own words |
| GPT4All | MIT — repository | Desktop app | "Run Local LLMs on Any Device", in its own words |
| LocalAI | MIT — repository | Server | "Run any model — LLMs, vision, voice, image, video — on any hardware", in its own words |
| KoboldCpp | AGPL-3.0 — repository | Single-file app with a KoboldAI UI | "Run GGUF AI models locally … One File. Zero Install.", in its own words |
| mlx-lm | MIT — repository | Python package on Apple's MLX | Running models on Apple silicon with MLX |
| textgen (text-generation-webui) | AGPL-3.0 — repository | Desktop app | "Text, vision, tool-calling, OpenAI/Anthropic-compatible API", in its own words |
| llamay | Proprietary, free to run — pricing | One binary, apps, Studio | Reads Ollama's store; OpenAI, Anthropic and Ollama APIs; contexts that fork and restore |
llama-server is the reference engine. See llama.cpp vs llamay./api/chat, /api/generate and /api/tags, so nothing is re-downloaded and nothing is rewritten. See Ollama vs llamay. Both can run at once. Ollama keeps port 11434, llamay takes 11435, and llamay reads the models Ollama has already pulled, so this costs no downloads:
curl -fsSL https://llamay.com/install.sh | shllamay run -m llama3.2:3b -p "hello" — a model Ollama already hasllamay serve, then point a client at http://localhost:11435/v1It depends on why you are leaving. llama.cpp for speed and control, LM Studio or Jan for a desktop app, vLLM for serving many users from GPUs, and llamay to keep Ollama's models and API while adding contexts you can fork and save.
llama.cpp (MIT), vLLM (Apache-2.0), Jan (Apache-2.0), GPT4All (MIT), LocalAI (MIT), KoboldCpp (AGPL-3.0), mlx-lm (MIT) and textgen (AGPL-3.0), going by each repository's licence. LM Studio and llamay are proprietary.
Yes, to llamay: it reads Ollama's model store in place and serves those models by name. Other tools generally need their own copy of the GGUF file.
Not for llamay, which serves Ollama's own API as well as OpenAI's and Anthropic's. For other servers, an OpenAI-compatible client usually needs only a new base URL.
