LM Studio is a desktop app for finding, downloading and chatting with local models, built on MLX and llama.cpp; llamay is a local inference engine that is one binary, with apps in front of it. Both are proprietary and free to use. Choose LM Studio for the most polished model browser and chat window, and MLX models on a Mac. Choose llamay for a server that also speaks Ollama's API and reads Ollama's models, contexts you can fork and save, or a Mac with an Intel chip.
| LM Studio | llamay | |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Proprietary app from Element Labs; licensed for personal and internal business use, no reverse engineering — app terms. The lms CLI is MIT — lms | Proprietary, free to download and run — pricing |
| Engine | "MLX and llama.cpp under the hood" — lmstudio.ai | Its own engine, written in Go; reads GGUF — architecture |
| Mac | Apple silicon, macOS 14 or newer; Intel Macs are not supported — system requirements | Apple silicon with Metal (app: macOS 13 or later); Intel Macs run the command line and Studio — the apps |
| Windows | x64 (AVX2) and ARM; 4 GB of dedicated VRAM recommended — system requirements | x64 and arm64 installers; CPU only — backends |
| Linux | x64 and ARM64 AppImage, Ubuntu 20.04 or newer — system requirements | .deb, .rpm and tarballs; CUDA or Vulkan in the GPU build — install |
| APIs | OpenAI-compatible, Anthropic-compatible /v1/messages, and its own REST API — developer docs; examples use port 1234 — Anthropic compatibility | OpenAI, Anthropic and Ollama APIs on port 11435 — HTTP API |
| Headless | llmster, LM Studio's core as a daemon, driven by lms — developer docs | llamay serve, or the background service the installer sets up — serving |
| Model formats | GGUF through llama.cpp and MLX models through MLX — lmstudio.ai | GGUF only; MLX weights are not read — models |
Neither is open source. If that is the requirement, look at llama.cpp, Ollama or Jan on the alternatives page.
No. LM Studio's app terms say the software is the exclusive property of Element Labs and forbid reverse engineering. Its lms command-line tool is published separately under the MIT licence.
No. llamay is proprietary software from Kosa8 Labs. It is free to download and run on your own machine; the hosted plans are what is sold.
No. LM Studio's system requirements say Intel-based Macs are not supported. llamay's command line and Studio run on Intel Macs on the CPU; its Mac app needs Apple silicon.
No. llamay reads GGUF files. LM Studio runs both GGUF and MLX models on a Mac.
Yes. LM Studio documents /v1/messages, and llamay serves /v1/messages natively, alongside OpenAI's API and, in llamay's case, Ollama's.
